Hospice Awareness Week: Let’s Keep Community Hospice Strong in Taupō
At Lake Taupo Hospice, we provide vital care, comfort, and compassion to people facing the end of life—all within their own homes and community. As a community hospice with no in-patient unit, our support wraps around patients and families where they live, helping them feel safe, dignified, and cared for in familiar surroundings.
Our community is there for us, and we’re incredibly grateful for the generous support we receive—from volunteers, donors, businesses, and local fundraisers. It’s because of you that we’re able to do what we do.
But even with this incredible backing, we’re part of a national hospice system under pressure.
Hospices support one in three people who die in Aotearoa each year, yet government funding only covers about half of the actual cost. Last year alone, hospices across New Zealand had to raise over $112 million just to keep services running.
Thanks to our amazing Taupō community, we continue to provide high-quality care—but without a fairer and more sustainable funding model from the government, hospices like ours are being stretched. We’re advocating for change now to ensure that we can keep delivering the care people need, when they need it most.
This Hospice Awareness Week, we’re asking our supporters to stand with us once again. Help us remind decision-makers how vital hospice care is—not just nationally, but right here in Taupō.
Together, we can protect and strengthen hospice care for generations to come.
