Volunteers - A constant support from the beginning
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week and our 40th anniversary, there is one simple truth that sits at the very heart of Lake Taupō Hospice:
It all started with volunteers.
Forty years ago, a small group of passionate local people shared a vision that no one in our community should face the end of life alone. Inspired by the need for compassionate care closer to home, they gathered around kitchen tables, held meetings in lounge rooms, organised fundraisers, and gave their time freely to create something that didn't yet exist – Hospice in Taupō.
There was no building, no large organisation, and no certainty of what the future would hold. There were simply people who cared and a community willing to help.
Those early volunteers became the foundation of Lake Taupō Hospice. They visited patients, supported families, organised events, sold raffle tickets, served on committees, and raised the funds needed to make hospice care a reality in our district. Forty years later, that spirit of generosity remains just as strong.
Today, Lake Taupō Hospice continues to provide exceptional specialist palliative care and support to patients and whānau across our community, and we simply could not do it without our volunteers.
Every year, our volunteers donate thousands of hours of their time. They deliver equipment to our patients homes, help in various roles in our Hospice Shops, bake, garden, help with patient activities, assist at events, support fundraising initiatives, and lend a helping hand wherever it is needed.
Some volunteers have been with us for decades. Others are just beginning their journey with Hospice. Each one brings something unique, but they all share the same desire – to make a difference in the lives of others. Their contribution goes far beyond the hours they give.
Volunteers create connection. They bring comfort, companionship, and moments of joy. They help ensure our patients and families feel supported, cared for, and never alone.
As we reflect on our 40-year journey, it is impossible to tell the story of Lake Taupō Hospice without telling the story of our volunteers. They have been there since the beginning, and they continue to be vital support in our organisation today.
To every volunteer who has given their time over the past four decades – whether for a few hours or many years – thank you.
Thank you for believing in the vision.
Thank you for helping us grow.
Thank you for making hospice care possible in our community.
This National Volunteer Week, we celebrate you.
