Noel Peters: Tremains Volunteer of the Month
They say some people are worth their weight in gold, and Noel Peters is certainly one of them. Yesterday, Noel was recognised as Tremains Taupō’s Volunteer of the Month—a well-deserved honour for someone who gives so much of himself to others.
Noel joined Lake Taupō Hospice as a volunteer six years ago. Since then, every Tuesday and Friday, he arrives with a warm smile and an even warmer heart. Dedicated, compassionate, and quietly tireless, Noel plays a vital role in supporting patients and bringing comfort, joy, and a sense of connection to their week.
But Noel doesn’t just turn up—he shows up. Before the day’s activities begin, he drives a 20km route around town to collect patients who are unable to get to hospice on their own. For many, this trip is more than just a ride—it’s a highlight of their week. One patient shared, “Noel isn’t just a great driver, he’s great company, too.”
Once everyone is gathered at Izard Hospice House, Noel helps set the tone for the day by preparing tea and coffee and creating a relaxed, welcoming environment. He’s always up for a “good old chat,” listening to patients’ stories and sharing a few of his own with his trademark humour and kindness.
Tuesdays are filled with social activities—visiting singing groups, word games, puzzles, armchair travel, mini-golf, and skittles. Fridays take on a more hands-on approach, with crafts like pottery animals and masks, building wooden bird boxes, decorating photo frames, and even baking biscuits. Through it all, Noel is ever-present, offering gentle encouragement, lending a hand, and making sure everyone feels supported and included.
What truly sets Noel apart is his unwavering dedication. Beyond his regular volunteering hours, he often goes the extra mile—literally—helping patients run errands or taking them to appointments. His quiet nature, deep compassion, and wonderful sense of humour make him an irreplaceable member of the hospice family.
Noel’s personality and personal values reflect everything Lake Taupō Hospice stands for—delivering solution-focused palliative care with compassion and kindness.
When asked why he gives so much of his time and heart to Lake Taupō Hospice, Noel simply smiles and says, “I just love it.”
Thank you, Noel, for everything you do. You are a shining example of the difference one person can make.
