September marks Wills month – a month dedicated to reminding us that having a legal Will in place is essential in securing your family’s future and ensuring that your wishes are respected. Writing a Will can seem daunting and uncomfortable however, it is one of the most important documents you can create.

What is a Will?

A Will is a legal document outlining how you would like your assets, including property, money and personal belongings to be distributed after your death as well as to name guardians for minor children and specify your funeral arrangement preferences.

What happens if I don’t have a Will?

Decisions about your assets are made by the courts and may not align with your wishes.

Why is it important to have a Will?

1)      Ensures your wishes are respected. A Will gives you control over what happens to your assets after you have died.

2)      Provides for your loved ones. It allows you to provide for your friends and family and ensures that your partner, spouse, children or other loved ones in your life are taken care of according to your wishes.

3)      Prevents family disputes. A clear, legally binding Will can prevent potential disputes among family members, which often arise when there is no guidance on how you want your assets divided.

4)      Supports a cause you care about. If you have a charity or cause in your heart, a Will enables you to leave a legacy gift.

5)      Names guardians for minor children. If you have children who are under 18 years of age you can designate who you’d like to care for them, in the event of your death, ensuring they are raised by someone you trust.
