The Dr’s Quintet - Lake Taupō Hospice Fundraiser
In its tenth year, the Dr’s Quintet musical is set to captivate audiences once again. This unique musical event boasts a line up of talented musicians, primarily drawn from the NZ Doctors Orchestra, which creates an ensemble that convenes annually across New Zealand. The Dr’s Quintet musicians have musical prowess and an unwavering commitment to the art of chamber music, which sets them apart.
Dr’s Quintet performances have adopted an unconventional and rarely seen format: an "Open Rehearsal", providing an opportunity to see and experience the rehearsals, over the weekend which culminate in a delightful "play-through" on Sunday, November 5th at 1:00 pm.
Interaction with the audience is key to the success of the format. During the rehearsal, the musicians engage with the public, welcoming their input on the nuances of the music. This open critique and transparent approach invites the audience, accommodating attendees of all ages, to stay as little or as long as they wish.
The rehearsal sessions are divided into two segments running over the weekend of the 4th -5th November and are held at The Great Lake Centre, Taupō:
Open Rehearsals
Saturday 4th November 10am - 12pm and 2pm - 4pm
Sunday 5th November 10am - 12pm
Playthrough
Sunday 5th November 1pm
This year's talented ensemble includes
Dr. Allister Bush on the first violin, who doubles as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Capital Coast Health.
Dr. Anne Kim, a House Surgeon at Palmerston Hospital, takes up the second violin.
Associate Professor Anthony Doyle, a Radiologist at Auckland Hospital, showcases his skill on the viola.
Dr. Peter Fleischl, a Roving Rural GP Locum, brings his expertise to the cello.
Dr. Louise Webster, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Starship Hospital, graces the piano.
The chosen piece for this year's performance is none other than Brahms' Piano Quintet in F Minor, renowned as one of Brahms's most exquisite chamber works. It's a composition that demands exceptional pianistic ability, and Dr. Louise Webster, a Doctor of Music and one of New Zealand's eminent contemporary composers, fits the bill perfectly. Her commissioned works have even been performed by the NZSO, highlighting the high standards she brings to the group.
For a decade now, these dedicated musicians have been hosting this event in Taupō. Lake Taupō Hospice holds a special place in the Quintet’s and community's heart. A gold coin donation at the door of the Open Rehearsals and the play through are an opportunity for attendees to be part of a beautiful musical journey and the organizer’s extend a warm invitation to attendees to generously donate and support Lake Taupō Hospice.
