Honouring Richard Izard: A legacy of generosity and compassion

On Friday at St Andrews Anglican Church in Taupō, hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects and bid farewell to Richard Izard CNZM, OBE, a remarkable philanthropist, entrepreneur, and classic car enthusiast. On 2nd January 2024, at the age of 89, Mr. Izard passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. Among those with him were many of the staff from Lake Taupō Hospice who knew Richard through not only his connection with Izard Hospice House but through caring for him during his own palliative care journey over much of 2023.

Richard path to success began with his pioneering efforts in the local manufacture of tungsten carbide-tipped sawblades. These high-quality sawblades, primarily exported to the United States, contributed significantly to his wealth, and positioned him as a key player in the industry. His entrepreneurial spirit not only fuelled his personal success but became the foundation for the generous philanthropy that would define his later years.

In a testament to his philanthropic spirit, Richard and his wife, Patience, made a substantial contribution to the Lake Taupō Hospice in 2015 when they donated the funds to acquire and renovate Izard House. Purchased from the Stevenson family, this beautiful, architectural property has been a sanctuary for both staff, patients visiting for day programmes and the community for events.

The Izards' commitment to hospice care was deeply personal. Patience Izard, Richard’s wife, received hospice care in 2015, a service that left an indelible mark on the couple. Richard, was later to experience the compassionate care of hospice. The clinical and hospice support team worked closely with Richard, recognising him not just as a patient but as a man with a breadth and depth of stories from his full and fascinating life.

Richard legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments and philanthropy. Described by those who worked closely with him as a man with numerous stories, he brought a unique perspective and rich experiences to all who had the privilege of knowing him. During some of the most recent conversations, Christine Rankin (Lake Taupō Hospice Acting CEO), has had with Richard she said he talked a lot about his hopes for the organisation and what he would love to see Izard Hospice House used for in the future. He would love to see the community benefit from his gift not just through the Hospice services but as a place to hold events and open days with the land to be used for further buildings or an investment opportunity to assist with funding Lake Taupō Hospice to keep community based palliative care services going.

In the passing of Richard Izard CNZM, OBE, Taupō mourns the loss of a distinguished gentleman, who’s legacy lives on among other initiatives through Izard Hospice House, a symbol of his unwavering commitment to helping those facing life's most challenging moments. Richard Izard's life serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the profound impact one individual can have through compassion, generosity, and a dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.

Kim Manunui

Hi, I’m Kim and I work with a great team to help individuals, as well as small and not so small businesses get their message, product and services to the world using digital media and creating wonderful websites that don’t cost the earth.

I was born in Canada, and grew up around Vancouver and the mountains of British Columbia. My love of pristine environments led me to New Zealand and eventually to the mountains, lakes and rivers of the central North Island which is home. My family’s heritage is here, and it’s from here that Korio traverses the planet.

The digital world is never static and neither are we.

And I say ‘we’ because I work with an awesome group of talented people who I gather together as required to complete a project.  Whatever your business, not-for-profit or individual needs are we gather the best team to get the job done.

Collaboratively we are creative, share sustainable values and work hard for great outcomes because that’s the buzz of satisfaction that drives us.

If you have an audience and market to reach, we can make that happen. Creative design, words that work and smart behind the scenes stuff that cuts through the online noise. We’ll design your website and then build it. We’ll manage the content as well as all your hosting needs. We can handle your online advertising so you get noticed,
and we’ll manage your social media presence so you get the clicks, likes and engagement to grow your business. All within the budget you set, because none of this needs to cost the earth.  And the job doesn’t stop when your website goes live. We are your virtual business partner.
