Community nursing & palliative care for the Lake Taupō District
Hospice is a philosophy of care which extends beyond the physical needs of a person to their emotional, social and spiritual needs and those of their family. At Lake Taupo Hospice we provide all our community nursing and volunteer services completely free of charge.
Lake Taupō Hospice cares for our patients and their families and friends both before and after a death irrespective of their social status, financial circumstances, age, gender or religion .
Izard Hospice House on 29 Huka Falls Road in Taupō and is our administration base. Here you’ll find our hospice community nurses, the administration manager, fundraising and promotions manager and the manager of volunteer services. Izard Hospice House is also home to our day care programme (the Tuesday Club), art and craft group, Kowhai Bereavement Group and various activities such as massage therapy and relaxation classes.
“Lake Taupō Hospice is a specialist palliative care unit – the term ‘palliative care’ means alleviating without curing.”
The Concept of Community Nursing
Lake Taupō Hospice is an organisation based on community nursing. Our focus is on caring for people in their homes.
Patients are usually referred to hospice community nursing from their GPs or hospital doctors although a patient’s family/friends are welcome to call in to Izard Hospice House on Huka Falls Road or contact us directly and our care coordinators would then contact the doctor on their behalf.
We provide support for patients, their families and those who care for them through practical advice and physical, emotional and spiritual support with the emphasis on pain relief and symptom management.
We live in a caring community and without their ongoing support, both financial and through volunteer efforts, we would not be able to maintain our level of service. We are most grateful for the help we receive.
When it comes to hospice palliative care, the earlier we’re involved, the more we can help.
Our palliative care services provide specialist and compassionate nursing care at home for people in our community.
We love volunteers! Find out how you can get involved by becoming a hospice volunteer.
